You can ask anyone: “What is art?”, and the most recurring answer will be: “Paintings, or music.”
I like to think art is a form of expressing yourself through creating. I see it as a way to speak without words. It doesn’t have limits or rules. So why, with all this freedom of expression and the limitlessness, do some people think that graffiti and fashion are not art? These two are opposite just as much as they are equal to each other, and to art.
Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
Some say Graffiti isn’t art. They say that it ruins city landscapes and anyone could make graffiti, if they wanted to. The old-fashioned even say it’s a sort of vandalism, and that it ought to be announced illegal. Graffiti is one of the most fascinating forms of art. Even though the roots of graffiti came mostly from hip-hop, activism and vandalism, nowadays, they are used to say what is not acceptable to say with words. One of such “voiceless speakers” is Banksy. An English-based, anonymous artist, who colors the walls of great cities, leaving breath-taking pieces behind him. His works, mostly provocative and activistic, are so valued that the buildings on which they are placed rise in status, as well as price. Some of Banksy’s works were sold at auctions, both private and open for public, with prices such as hundred thousands and millions of dollars.
Not only does he do graffiti all around London and New York, but he also engages in a number of provocative actions, one example of which is when he loaded a a truck full of bleating stuffed stuffed sheep and drove them to a slaughter house the streets of New York., full with stuffed animals screaming, to drive around the streets.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” – Coco Chanel
Clothing designers put their souls and minds into creating the designs, just like the artists and sculptors do when they create. Many of the now-famous designers began as artists or gallery owners, which only shows how closely they interact with art and it’s branches.
If you take all the possible forms of art and put them together with a mixture of innovation and natural beauty you will get fashion. It’s the way everyday-people express themselves and show the world who they are. Why can’t such a freedom of expression be called art? Of course not all fashion is art. There is a special feeling about the real coutures. There must be a reason why people spend millions just to organize a 30 minute catwalk show. People want to feel the beauty, not just see it hanging on their wall, but actually feel it, and fashion gives them what they want and crave.
